About the Percentage Calculator
Percentages come up in tips, tax, exam scores, price changes, growth figures and budgets. This calculator covers the three most common questions without you having to remember the formulas.
Percentage change is calculated as (Y − X) ÷ X × 100, so a negative result means a decrease. Percentage change is undefined when the original value is 0, and "X is what % of Y" is undefined when Y is 0. The calculator shows a message in those cases.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate a percentage of a number?
Divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by the number. For example, 20% of 250 is 0.2 × 250 = 50.
How is percentage change calculated?
Subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the original value and multiply by 100. Going from 80 to 100 is (100 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100 = 25%.
What does a negative percentage change mean?
It means the value decreased. For example, going from 100 to 75 is a −25% change.
How many decimal places are shown?
Results are rounded to at most six decimal places, and trailing zeros are removed.
