About the BMI Calculator
Body Mass Index is weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. It is a quick screening number used by health services to group adults into weight categories: under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 is the normal range, 25 to 29.9 is overweight and 30 or more is obesity.
BMI does not measure body fat directly and does not account for muscle mass, age, sex or ethnicity. The adult categories do not apply to children and teenagers. Use it as a general guide, not a diagnosis, and talk to a health professional about your own situation.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is BMI calculated?
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². For 70 kg and 1.75 m, that is 70 ÷ 3.0625 ≈ 22.9.
What is a normal BMI?
For adults, a BMI from 18.5 to 24.9 is generally considered the normal range.
Can I use pounds and feet?
This calculator expects kilograms and centimeters. Use the KG to Pounds and Feet to Centimeters converters to convert your measurements first.
Is BMI accurate for athletes or children?
Not always. Muscular people can have a high BMI without excess fat, and children need age- and sex-specific BMI charts instead of the adult categories.
